Legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has posthumously etched his name into global music history after becoming the first African artist to receive the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Members of the Kuti family — Femi, Yeni, Shalewa, and Kunle Kuti — were present to accept the award on behalf of the late musician, in what became an emotional and proud moment for the iconic Nigerian dynasty.
In her acceptance remarks, Yeni Kuti expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Recording Academy and supporters of the family, describing the award as deeply meaningful. She also acknowledged absent family members, including Seun Kuti, Motunrayo, and her nephew Made, who she praised for advancing the Afrobeat movement.
Femi Kuti, in his tribute, thanked DJs, journalists, fans, legal representatives, and the family’s record label, Partisan Records, for sustaining Afrobeat’s global influence. He described the recognition as a major milestone not only for his family but for Africa and the global struggle for justice and peace.
Recording Academy Chief Executive Officer Harvey Mason Jr., said the recipients represent a rare group of artists whose work has shaped generations and redefined modern music.
The honour further cements Fela’s enduring legacy as a cultural and political force, whose revolutionary sound and message continue to inspire millions worldwide more than two decades after his passing.
