A woman in her 40s has allegedly stabbed her three young children inside a car in Australia’s Blue Mountains, killing a five-year-old child and leaving two others critically injured.
The incident occurred on Sunday near Waratah Road in Valley Heights, west of Sydney. The woman was also found outside the vehicle with serious injuries following the attack.
According to The Sun, police are treating the woman as the suspect in what they described as a domestic-related homicide. Investigators are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The three children, all aged five or under, were discovered with stab wounds inside a car parked on a vacant block near a fire trail. Cyclists who came across the scene raised the alarm, while members of the public attempted to provide first aid before emergency services arrived.
Despite efforts to save the five-year-old, the child died at the scene.
The two surviving children and their mother were taken to hospital in critical condition. The children were transported to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, while their mother was taken to Westmead Hospital.
NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna said the mother was being treated as the suspect and that detectives would seek to question her if she survived her injuries.
“The mother is the suspect in this matter, for domestic-related homicide, and that investigation is ongoing,” McKenna said.
Investigators are examining the weapon allegedly used in the attack and the circumstances that led to the stabbing.
The children’s father was at work when police contacted him about the incident. Superintendent John Nelson said officers had informed him about the deaths and injuries involving his family.
The incident shocked residents in the normally quiet Blue Mountains community, with emergency services converging on the area.
Local resident Glenn Lyall said he initially believed there had been a road accident after seeing a vehicle and two cyclists near the scene.
Another resident, Peita Davies, said neighbours were confused about how the family had come to be at the location, adding that nobody in the area had heard anything before emergency services arrived.
Supt Nelson praised members of the public who rushed to assist the injured family, saying the incident had been traumatic for witnesses and emergency responders. Police said officers who attended the scene would also be offered support.
The alleged attack came during a particularly deadly weekend in New South Wales, where police were also investigating the alleged deaths of three women in separate incidents within about 12 hours on Saturday.
Blue Mountains councillor Darren Rodrigo expressed condolences to the affected family and thanked residents and emergency responders who assisted at the scene.
Police are continuing to investigate the alleged stabbing, including the weapon believed to have been used and the events leading up to the deaths and injuries.
The case has drawn comparisons with the ongoing high-profile case involving Lindsay Clancy in Massachusetts, United States. That case ended in a mistrial on September 4, 2026, and is scheduled to return to court on September 29, 2026.
The Clancy tragedy unfolded on the evening of January 24, 2023, in the suburban town of Duxbury, Massachusetts.
Clancy, then a 32-year-old labour and delivery nurse and mother of three, was at home with her children: five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan.
Her husband, Patrick, briefly left the house to pick up dinner and medication. During the time he was away, Clancy used exercise bands to strangle all three children before jumping from a second-storey window in what was described as a severe suicide attempt.
Patrick returned to the house and discovered his injured wife before finding the children. Cora and Dawson were pronounced dead that evening, while infant Callan remained on life support for several days before also dying.
The subsequent legal case, Commonwealth v. Lindsay Clancy, has focused heavily on Clancy’s mental state at the time of the killings and has attracted widespread attention across the United States.
